Genetics???

ssdd666 May 06, 2005 04:13 PM

I was wondering if anyone knew any good books talking about Boa Morphs and the genetics of them. I keep seeing "hypo" and "het" and Id really like to know what exactly they mean. Along with what some of the different morphs are and how rare they are.
thanks

Well i can help with some of the morphs in general:

Het: Heterozygous: refers to an animal that carries a gene for a recessive trait morph (ie: albino, anery)

Hypo: Hypomelanistic: refers to a co-dominate trait which can be visually pasted from the parent to the offspring regardless of the second parents genetics.

As for books... other than the boa constrictor manual, which every boa owner should have i really don’t think there are any that pertain to the morph market only. The best think to do is read read read all the forums and just ask questions until you understand... Genetics get trick up in the double hets, and co-dominate train plus recessive trait (ie: sunglows, snows, ghosts)

Good luck!

another question: in the classifieds I see "4.1" "0.1" describing somthing about the snake. what do these numbers mean??

OHHHHH thats a easy questions, sooo 0.0.0 are for the sexs avaliable... Males.Females.unsexed sooooo 4.1 means 4 males and 1 female avaliable.
Hope that helps!
