Gila Bite Issue-Need Urgent Help

yasin1 May 06, 2005 07:38 PM

Hey there,

I have too adult Gilas that I am trying to breed right now.

Today I put the female into the male's cage. They started mating almost instantly. After 10-15 minutes they stopped. So I wanted to take female out back to her cage.

However she got scared when I tried to pick her up and attacked to the male. She got his cheek and chewed for 3 good minutes. I can see some bite marks but no (or just a little) blood can be seen. (thank god to that thick skin)

Is there a serious problem? I guess he is immune to her venom but can tehre be any other issues?

Please let me know asap... a happy moment turned into a nightmare

Thanks
Yasin

ps:If they are Ok, how many times more should I introduce her into his cage....

ps2: By the way I know I wasn't careful enough, I should have moved the male away before trying to pick her up.

I wouldn't be concerned about the bite if there are no lacerations. As you've learned, just be more careful in the future.

I am not sure why you removed the female so quickly. You should have left the female in the male for much longer. A copulation of 10-15 minutes is very short (too short). I like to see 2-3 hours or longer. Also, multiple short attempts before a longer copulation are common. Even multiple copulations in a single night are common. I've had successful breeding (leading to a viable clutch) with as short as two copulations over two consecutive nights. These two events were late in the female’s reproductive cycle. On the other extreme, this season one female mated 5 different evenings (some multiple cops per evening) from 4-12 to 5-2 and she ovulated on 5-5. So far, I’ve seen 5 ovulations,

Mark

Your animal will be fine, do not worry. I know you are excited but never remove an animal that is breeding. They most likely would have bred several times. If you want to be a sucessful breeder of Heloderma you have to get a hold of your self, and let your animals do their thing. Also if you get eggs after you put them into the incubator, leave them alone. I had the same problem when I first started out, I would get so excited that I would tend to over due things. Put your female back with the male, make sure they don't fight and let them do their thing.
Take care,
