Respiratory infection???

BlueEyedDevil May 07, 2005 01:33 PM

I have been doing some research on respiratory infections in boas, something on the message boards caused me to question if mine had one. Anyways... she does not have any discharge or bubbling from the nostrils or mouth, no coughing or open-mouth breathing. However sometimes when I have her out she whistles when she breathes. It's nothing major but enough that I do notice it. Is this a sign? If there are no other signs? I have to find a good heerp vet in my area... is it worth taking her in to get checked?
Thanks for the help!!!

BlueEyedDevil,
...A whistling sound during breathing can be a sign of a respiratory infection. In BRBs it is more often caused by low humidity. These snakes can quickly become dehydrated if kept in too dry an environement and dry skin, sometimes from sticking around the nostrils during shedding will cause a whistling sound. A BRB that is healthy and well hydrated will nearly always feel like it's skin is very slightly oily or moist. If even a little dehydrated the skin will feel dry or slightly scratchy.

And that would go back to my question in another post about if I am keeping her too dry... if dehydration can cause them to whistle then that is probably what it is. Thank you for your input Jeff. You seem to have some very intelligent insights on caring for these beautiful creatures.
Thanks again!!!

Mine has been wheezing for along time now. I have taken him to the vet twice and gotten shots twice to give him. The wheezing has not gone away but he seems to function just fine. He eats well and is healthy from what I can see but he just wheezes and the longer he is out and moving around the more it becomes noticable. I don't know whats up so I am curious also.
