HELP... Bloated LEO

jgika May 07, 2005 01:49 PM

hi all-

i have a 2-3 year old female. She seemed to be extremely healthy until recently. here enormously fat tail is now rather skinny and her belly looks really bloated. What can i do? She has not been around any males so I can definitely say she is not gravid. She has laid eggs in the past ( about a year ago), but has been in her own tank ever since then....

Please help!!!

Thanks Jon!

Hi. I don't know all that much about leos since I just got mine about a week ago but I have read a lot of stuff on the internet and they say that if the tail gets skinny and the stomach swells it may be a sign of impaction. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. What do you use as substrtate?

Deffinately sounds like impaction, try to get a vet visit ASAP! Also, it is possible for a female who hasn't been with a male to become gravid, the eggs would be infertile of course but it can happen. Change her substrate to paper towels and give her her some warms baths to relax her muscles and help her pass the sand. Good luck! Keep us updated.

This gecko only eats mealworms out of a dish so I really cant see here getting sand in her mouth that could cause impaction...Not sure if this helps assist anybody who might have answers!!

As I can say from experience, it does sound like an impaction. You need to get her to a vet ASAP. There's not really anything you can do on your own to fix the problem when it gets that far.

Yes your leo needs a vet trip immediately. It takes awhile for the tails to thin so in the future a vet visit (or at least a fecal screening) is in order as soon as you start to see it happening.

Even if they eat out of a dish she could be eating sand when you are not looking.

Is she still pooping and eating?

It could be an impaction. It could also be advanced stages of parasites. After parasites have been latched on to the intestines forawhile they cause leaks which causes fuid build up in the stomach cavity and can be seen as a swollen appearance.

Which happened first, the thinning tail or the bloated looking stomach?

Either way, she definately needs to go to the vet

There is still a posability for her to be gravid. Females will sometimes lay eggs without ever being with a male. Of course they will be infertile. If she is losing alot of weight you should deffinetly get her checked out.

Well she is still bloated tail is about the same size and not eating. She is however pooping. She seems very sluggish though... The only significant weight loss I see is on her tail...

Hope this update helps...
