Pure Curiosity on cages

Rydair May 07, 2005 05:49 PM

Just out of curiosity I was wondering what size cage a full grown burmese python would need to live in comfortably? Now i know youd never find one in gallons Im talking dementions in feet.

Your room reminds of me mine when I was your age! Ideally, a full grown burm (realizing that males don't get as bulky as females) should have a minimum sized cage that is 8' wide x 3' deep x 2' high. Ideally, a cage in the neighborhood of 12' wide x 4' deep x 4' high is better (which is what I use). These are big snakes that need space to stretch out a bit to stay healthy on a long term basis. For a 17 year old gal, I would recommend other python species that make incredibly fascinating pets such as borneo short tailed pythons (all of the girth of a big burm wrapped in a body that max's out at 6-8'), various carpet pythons, Olive Pythons (12-14' but easy to manage), etc.

I think i'm kinda confused over the issue of the radiat heat pads. You said they mount on the roof of the cage? So this will create adequate heat for both day and night? I'm basing all my observations on this pic: [img]http://www.herpshop.com.au/pictures/hs_PetZoneHeatPad.jpg[img]
I think i might've done that link wrong though.

I think why my Burm is that size is i keep my Burm on somewhat on a leaner diet. I feed my Burm about twice a month on the largest mice the store has. So far, my Burm is still very very active, "squishy" as my sister calls it, and doesn't seem to have any problems except shedding which i will try and correct with more mistings.

Disregard my previous post.

Thanks for the advice! Ill deffinatly check out the borneo short tailed pythons. I have a pic of my whole body wraped up in a Burm named Erma when I was 6 so Ive alwayes liked 'em but I think an animal that size should wait atleast until after college haha...if I can wait that long!

Seriously, once you get your first borneo or blood you'll be hooked; they are truly spectacular snakes and you literally get the same feel of having a giant snake but one that can be easily managed by one person and won't take up your entire house for space (a full grown adult will do just fine in a cage that measures 4' x 3' x 18".
