Portable Balls??

sprastr May 07, 2005 06:23 PM

Hey guys...I'm considering a bp but at the same time I am leaving Florida in about six months. I heard that if you have to move around, a bp or a redtail were best but I wanted to double check how good they were with it. I don't want to get one if it would get overly stressed with an out of state move. I am a little companion crazy right now but I don't want to do anything that wouldn't be in the little guy's best interests. Any info would be great.

He asked a simple question, and nobody can help him out.

Don't worry about a move. A ball will sometimes go off feed for a while if it's moved, but it will usually eat again sooner or later.

A boa will usually eat no matter what, as long as conditions are OK.

Just don't worry about it either way. Your snake will be fine. Reptiles can take a lot of abuse. Unfortunately, I see it all the time.

Reptiles are surprisingly resilient. I made a trip (driving) from Dallas, Texas to central Florida with over 150 reptiles (mostly Balls and Boas). It took two days and it was in June so it was fairly hot. Everything survived except a hatchling ETB. The Emmy showed no signs of stress but died the day we arrived, however, they are quite fragile. The Balls and Boas were fine and ready to eat.

My cousin was having problems feeding his spider ball. So I told him to bring it to me for a few months. He had tried live, prekilled, F/T, mice and rats. So he took the snake on a three hour drive to see me. Within ten minutes of him getting here, it ate three F/T mice for me. So maybe sometimes a car ride is all they need to get them eating again...lol

To finish the story, the spider ball proceeded to eat me out of house and home. I sent him back home three months later and he stopped eating again. So sometimes a car ride is all they need to stop eating.

LOL, ya think it might have been a personality conflict between the snake and your cousin?? Shoulda kept it for yourself.

Well technically we both own 1/2 of him, but he definitely seems to like me better...lol

more questions on the topic...do they need heat on car trips? i mean do you guys usually just stick them in boxes or what? cause this has the potential to be a 3 day, stay in hotel car trip. no short deal. i was thinking that i could just bring a 20 gallon tank to set up in the hotels but would it be alright with the a/c on all day in the car? thanks again

Mine got no heat. But then the trip from Texas to Florida in June, it was already warm. The AC in the hotel was not low enough to cause problems. It just depends on what conditions you are going to expose them to.
