I like to keep records of my snakes.
There is a great little thing called Herp Care Software that allows you to keep records.
I use it and really like it.
go to this link..........http://thegeckocam.com/
then look for ..download HCS
download this, open it up and start keeping those records.
easy to use.

I think it depends... How many snakes do you own? I own 2 and for me it is pretty easy to just keep a mental note. Hasn't failed me yet. But if you own several snakes then I would seriously suggest it. Also I jot down whenever I feel I need to keep a note. say if they don't feed, then I will jot it down just in case it is a while before they feed again. So it is really in your own hands what you choose to do. I would recomend downloading that software just in case though!
I have 3 corns, and I keep a spiral notebook where I jot down when they feed, shed and such things. I find it very useful, especially when they do something unusual or when I change some aspect of their environment. Sometimes you don't notice things that take a long time to develop and a notebook can help with that. Plus, if you ever have to take them to the vet for something, you can show the vet your log so they know exactly what kind of care the animal has received.
And if you're a tiny bit obsessive-compulsive like me, it's quite pleasing to keep a log.
With 6 juvenile corns, 6 Milks and 7 Adult Corns, I use a homegrown tracking chart for each snake. It is easy to see what the snakes history is for a year (one year per chart per snake..). It is done by hand as I have too many to record manually then transcribe to a file. I have codes for different events (shedding, weight, mating) and different food (live, frozen and relative size.) I would be lost without it. As much as I try to keep everyone on the same schedule, they all have their own personalities..
With 5 breeding females this spring, I made a chart (showing all 5 females) solely for tracking each female over the course of mating to hatching.....This comes in handy as we begin to plan out summer. Two boys, five females and one great wife - life is busy... Wouldn't have it any other way.
Let me know if you want to see the blank charts...

I keep a notebook with a page for each animal. I record when they were born (if I know, otherwise I guess), where I got them & an initial weight. I keep track of feedings, sheddings & weights.
I think the weight thing is especially important as it's REALLY hard to tell if they've lost weight until they've lost a LOT, unless you're keeping a record. I probably weigh everybody once a month or every two months. It's also kind of cool to see how much weight the young ones have gained in a month.
I also agree that it's nice to have that record when you go to the vet. Time can really fly & you may think "s/he hasn't eaten in a week or two", but then you go to the record & realize it's been 4 weeks & they've lost ___ grams. That info is really important for the vet.

The herp care software I mentioned keeps feeding records, shed records, breeding records, length records, weight records, sickness records, birth date, acquisition date, sale date, enclosure information including cleaning records, allows for a list of species and reminds you when it is time to feed and even allows you to add a picture of each snake with it's records.
I have 37 snakes at this time and it makes things much easier.
with 82 eggs incubation it is going to be even more advantagous.
I used to use a notebook but this is so much easier to keep up with. All on the computer. It does allow me to print information if needed.
have fun with whichever choice you make.

I've been using the Herp Care Software for nearly 2 years now and I do find it very helpful. I've got 23 snakes currently so it's faster for me to enter a few numbers in for each animal vs. writing things out like I used to. Also, I like the fact that you can track a lot of detail about enclosures (great for spot checks on temps or humidity). It gives you the option to export some of the data (feeding and breeding for example)to excel.

being i only have one snake, i think i can just keep a journal of whats happening.
but the count seems to grow quickly. You might want to get counseling BEFORE it is too late. The most that I had at one time was 13, now it is down to ONLY 7.
