Rheostats or thermostats prevent the UTH from heating to their maximum capacity which is way too hot for leos. You'll need a rheostat to keep the UTH from producing too much heat. Adding more layers won't do it. Leos like to burrow under the loose layers of paper towels anyway and may end up getting burned (reptiles aren't aware they can burn themselves sometimes). Getting a rheostat prevents the leo from overheating. Overheating a leo is almost as bad as not providing enough heat.

Probally the best idea is to get one. You can layer the towels but like Cleo says they sometimes get under them and reptiles don't feel heat quite the same as we do. Do you know anybody who can wire something 110 Volt and do it right? If so get a light dimmer switch from a home supply and wire it in the cord to the UTH. They are a rheostat too just biggger and more sturdy. Will last forever. If not zoo-med makes a nice one your local store should have one. Wish you luck let us know when you get it and its name

Cost about 20 bucks each and I currently have two of them which services 4 UTHs. If the leo is from Petco, most likely it is a normal phase baby. My first baby is hatching tomorrow (*hopefully*) and I am really caught between the names Demeter and Pixie...both beautiful names for the beauty that I am sure will be peeking up at me from the incubator sometime tomorrow!!!

mom says "He's saved his allowance money for the gecko's environment and has it all set up in his room"

sons says they are setting up tonight

either way go to home depot they do make extension cord type rehostats for much cheaper than the zoo med kind. that are just as good.

if they don;t carry them it is easy enough to wire one inline
don't spend 20 bucks on an item you can get for 2

So basic wiring is beyond me, even if you have step by step instructions a 2nd grader could read and comprehend. Lol, with me, it is best to get everthing all setup and ready for me. I would end up lighting the wire on fire and burning my house down (that wouldn't go over big with my parents, lol).

Ahem, I personally would feel MUCH better about suggesting that a child use 20 dollar rheostat than I would suggesting he do ELECTRICAL WIRING!!

Many adults don't know how to do that safely, you can't just tell a kid to do it and expect him to know how to get all the info on how to do it without burning the house down.
