Feed Youn Cal King

fatjayhawk May 07, 2005 09:38 PM

Just picked up a nice Cal King which would be just a few weeks old. It's my first time with this species and with the first effort I couldn't get him to take pinkes. I've never had problems with feeding before as long as the animal was healthy. Sometime's my you Bairds Rat needs coaxing but not even this worked. In this case he looks good. Cased the pinkie, smelling it several times but wouldn't go for it. I left the pinkie for more than an hour and covered the cage to give max privacy. Good heat gradient and he's active in the cage at least twice a day. I'd estimate it's been at least 9 days since the breeder fed it (and I didn't disturb it the first few days I had him home). I'd read they are pretty vigorous feeders. If there are suggestions that might work I'd love to hear them.

Give him a day or two of peace & quiet. Then, cut the head off a pinky & put body & head in a small container. Squeeze the head a little to get some of the brain-goo oozing out the neck...
YUM! Put snake in with head & body and see if he can resist. :D

That technique should be right before a last resort technique.

Leave the snake alone for a couple more days, try to raise the humidity in the tank. Make sure the snake isn't in shed, and give it lots of privacy.

After 5 days or so of privacy, put 2 brained pinky mice in with the snake, not disturbing the snake, and leave them overnight. Just incase you don't know, to get a brained pinky, get a toothpick and put it through the pinky's head, which will cause some brain matter to ooze out. That should work.
