Why does this look so scary?

yellowfox May 07, 2005 09:53 PM

I wake up this morning and i find this....

Talk about scary. I thought he was DEAD!!! As soon as i turned on his basking lamp he perked right up. Gave him about an hour to get his tank warmed up, put some greens and crix in and he ate. Just a strange sleeping position or is he trying to cool off?

You have a "dead dragon" too, my baby does the same thing except he crawls under the papertowels to sleep.I think its really cute but scary the first time you see it.

although mine has never slept like that I did think he passed one morning...he usually wakes up before lights come on, while I'm getting ready for work, one morning he didn't...couldn't see him breathing and didn't react to light tapping on tank...he was fine though must have just been deeply asleep...the little one sleeps standing up pressed against side of tank, either at top of branch or bottom of tank...

I was so scared.... I tapped on the glass too. Nothing I turned on his basking light and his eye kind of popped open.

I think it may have been to cold? Its usually 70 in my room so i didn't worry about extra heat at night but the other night it got a little chilly. I have an under tank heater now but i don't want to cook the little guy.

Does anyone else use one? Do you turn it off when you turn your basking lamp on?

undertank heaters from all that I have read can be dangerous, they can burn the belly since beardies can't feel direct heat...especially if you have sand and dig in it...how about an infrared heat lamp??? I know how you feel, I was beginning to get upset when Smaug finally did wake up...

my bullfrog once actually I believe knocked himself unconscious...I fed Smaug then put a couple crix in with the bullfrog and went to give Smaug water...I heard a loud splash which is normal but later when I looked in the pond (indoor) Jeremiah was floating with head down in water and butt up...thought he was dead...my daughter touched him a few times and nothing...my husband went to get him out with fish net and all of a sudden he swam away...I think maybe he hit his head off side of pond when diving in for crix...

Well i used a night bulb for him and he seemed to like it. It gives off heat and isn't that bright.

I didnt want to use the under tank heater either. I read that they have their heat sensing ability in their head so they moveaway when their head gets warm. So heating from under is bad.

sounds like the best way to go...

My room gets a bit chilly so I have an under the tank heater, infared heat lamp, and another light that gives off some heat. I also have sand. My heat pad only warms the tank slightly, nothing that would burn my dragon. At night he goes behind his climbing area and lies right where the heat is.

The under tank heater shouldn't really add that much heat to your environment. You should be able to put your hand on it. (it will be hot...but not burning).

heat rocks on the ohter hand do get dangerously hot.

UTH is the best way to go. In fact, Ive never heard of anyone saying thier dragon was burned with one.
