This Has Got To Be The Worst Day EVER........................

ErikStrait May 07, 2005 09:55 PM

Well All was good last night. I checked on all the reptiles before I went to bed, About midnight.

I woke up this morning to see my Main breeder female Henkeli(The GIANT one) was bleeding out of her cloaca and had something red coming out. I was FREAKING out as she can't be replaced and shes just great!

I called Alameda East (where Dr. Fitzgerald works, on Alimal planet). He wasn't in but they had another doctor in that could see reptiles.

So I rushed her over there and they took her to the back. About 20 minutes later she came out and told me that her cloaca prolapsed. She put it back inside of her but can't guarantee anything.

I told her that she is due to lay eggs in about a week and she then said that she may have trouble laying them. But chances are that if she can lay them without prolapsing then she can still breed but if she prolapses it would be best to not breed her anymore.

So now I am all freaked out that she will get egg bound or something. But ever since she came home she has been drinking and has eaten 1 cricket.

Wish me luck!! Thanks Erik

I wish you the best of luck with her and for her Erik, keep us updated. Only advice I have is, don't worry about it till it happens. Did the doctor say why this could have happened in the first place or do you know?

Mike

Thanks!

The Dr. wasn't sure how this could have happend. We (the Dr. & I) think that she was just going to the bathroom and then it popped out or it was during mating or .... But there is no way to know for sure. I just hope she makes it through. I never thought that females could have a prolapse though. Thanks Erik

i suffered a loss tonight. my very first ever hatchling "rex" died tonight. i've kinda had a little trouble with him since he began sexual maturation, seems as though he never had a pouch develop around his hemipenes....not quite a prolapse, i'd say because it began so early in his development, i would say around the age of 6 months. last night he was his normal self, had been feeding great and everything. tonight i smelled something funny as i was making my rounds of the tanks and found him on the bottom. seems as though his hemipenes finally did fully prolapse, or he must have gotten some sort of infection from them being partially exposed. i really take all the fault to myself, because i was always scared to take him to the vet for the fact that he was still so small. he was hatched out in december of 2003, which makes him almost a year and a half old. im kicking myself in the butt right now for this happening, thats a lot of effort and a beautiful gecko down the drain. i've been so busy lately with projects and finals that i havent been able to give my geckos much attention beyond watering and feeding, and the occasional head count.

ashes to ashes, lil guy. you were the reason why the hobby took over my life.

Very Very Sad always rips ya up!

Seems this special little leaf tailed dude inspired you, to make more beauties like him. So He did a GREAT thing while here!

You have learned so much and done so well with this species, and so many little lives have come into the world because of your care and dedication.

So not all was wasted, his life was so VERY MEANINGFUL, and you will always treasure him and the path he lead you on.

He will live on through your continued DEDICATION and in each new baby your able to hatch.

My female almost kicked the bucket a while ago. But now after two weeks of oral antibiotics and force feeding she is almost back to normal. I think her infection was directly related to over breeding as I think your females problem may be also. As with your female my female developed problems about a week before she was going to lay. Over breeding may be a serious thing in Uroplatus. Anyway best of luck with her.

Sorry about your loss umop_apisdn. Its hard to lose them. I wish you the best of luck with all your others!

Mad_1234, Sorry to hear about your female also. Hopefully she will pull through for you! My Vet and I thought about it being from over breeding, but she really isn't over breed. Every now-and-then she will not lay eggs for a month or two. And she hasn't been with the male for awhile as I have been taking her out of the cage and been tring to introduce another female to the male.

But as far as my female goes, she surrvived the night. The vet said that the first night would be the hardest. My female also drank alot from her fountain and she did eat 2 crickets that I saw!!!! Hopefully she will make it as I don't want to lose her. Thanks Erik

I've just finished a treating my female henk from a HARD crash. This last month and a half has been off and on. I noticed her getting real lethargic so I removed the male (they'd been housed together for ~5 months), and about a week later she dropped an egg. She regained her strength and then about three weeks later she went downhill fast. She just laid on the ground for about two days and then I began a treatment that Ben had used to revive one of his females with the same symptoms. We treated with a coccidiosis preventative, and it has worked great on my female. Oviously, these guys aren't as prolific (breeding) as we'd like them to be, and it's our job to ensure that they are able to produce year after year. Not just one year and then crash! But damn it'd be nice if they could just pop out clutch after clutch for eight months out of the year!

As long as you feed them well and well hydrated, U. ebanaui will breed that much. I've got one female thats on her fifth clutch this year and last year she had 8-9 (one round of inferts).

Also, its not that are incapable of producing that much. Its more like we haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Sure wish you the best with her. its such a shame, I pray she will be able to lay okay! let us know how she is!

This is close to my heart as Last weekend on a friday night my beloved 4 year old Lap chuckwalla had a prolaspe , penial, he was being a bit frisky earlier in the day, and I noticed a trial of blood. I picked him up to see the prolaspe.

Wouldnt you know Friday night ya cant get a freakin Vet. I had to think fast, so I remembered things I have read. I held him in a sink of cool water for 1 hour, YES we timed it!

Then I remember you keep it moist with KY jelly (atleast until you can get to a vet.) I took out all substrate, all furniture anything he may scratch himself on. And continued to squirt KY jelly on every few hours until 2 in the morning.

When I woke up, Thank God it had returned to normal and went back in.

I sure pray she will be fine!

If you catch a prolapse in the first few hours to first day then normally will return to the body. We deal with this a lot in the lab with mice and rats. Depending on the strain, they will prolapse more frequently if they are immunocomprised versus conventional.

Preperation H works well too.
