Zee's Columbia Co., Florida Eastern Kings.....

Keith Hillson May 07, 2005 11:56 PM

I really love my pair of 2004 hatch Columbia's I got from Zee last year. The female is a bit fiesty but to me thats part of her appeal. She is one of those thick muscular snakes as well that feels like you are holding coiled steel. Just thought I would share a few pics Ive taken of her over the last 8 months Ive had her.

That's a good looking eastern Keith. Here's my 04 female that is a sibling to your pair. She's much larger then my Outer Banks King. Zee's breeders did produce some big babies in that clutch.

Just gorgeous. But very un-chain-like, or is that a common appearance in part of the range? I can't help thinking that if those were albinos, there'd be a deluge of posts arguing they were from cal king outcrosses. I'm glad to see some "wild type" chain kings with good pedigrees to remind people that not every chain king looks like the classic phenotype.

If you look at my site more specifically the GA and FL pages you will notice that those animals are more ringed than chained. I think what brings about negative responses regarding the Albino Chain Kings is that the History is patchy and the appearance is not classic. Those things apart are enough to raise doubt but together they are even worse. Im in no way saying those are anything but L.g.g. I dont know but the evidence you found seemed to point to that they were legit. Again the only thing holding them back is the 2 above things mentioned and thats too bad that NERD didnt cover its bases on those it was pretty dumb on their part.

All the history aside they just don't look right. I have held thousands of easterns. This strain just does not fill the bill in any way, shape (physical) or form (temperament) characteristics of a pure eastern or any florida subspecies.

I have a strain of T negative yellow florida king that I have been breeding. I paid a large sum for what I thought was a valid new morph on the only avliable parents out there. The history checks also out on these from 3 very reputable breeders. I still have my doubts and have called up everyone associated with these and they all attest and assured me they are pure floridana.

I would have liked that they are the real deal to but my doubts are stronger than any amount of reason and history. It is a sense I have with working with a species for a very long time.. I guess I could have turned a deaf or dumb ear to what I knew was true and make some money. But that would have been dishonest to the lowest degree.

They must be crossed to what i think started as an amelanistic cal king was bred to a florida kingsnake. The 50/50 cross was then bred back to a pure florida king several times. So today they could be 10% cali and 90% floridana or who knows?.

I have decided to change the name on these to albino Florida Lemon kings. To match the name given by Florida residents who have been crossing florida kings with calif kings for eyons of generations. My stock does look better than the normal lemon kings that I have seen at countless smaller florida reptile shows but that doesn't mean they aren't the same thing.

So until someone comes up with a better name Albino Lemon florida kingwill do.
