CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS.......

The police came to my house and were here for about an hour looking around and I was answering questions because one of my nosy nieghbors looked in my house and saw " a suspicous plant, with what appreared to be a grow light" sitting at my back door. The "plant" was a scheferela plant and the grow light was an inferred light to keep Rana warm while she soaked up what little sun we had!!! Thank goodness one of the cops remembered me when I work for the city attorney and he was cool. He told me who called and why and said that the neighbors didn't think we were selling drugs, but that we were not very social and we could possibly be doing drugs.(??? HUH) They live a block away and we've only seen THEM about 5 times in 4 years, all my close neighbors came to my house when they saw the 3 cop cars pull up and it turned out to be a b.s. session and everyone got to meet the reasons for the plants and lights and the cops were cool with that, but I'm still a little peeved about.

That sux but is funny at the smae time. My fiance jokes about this all the time saying, "it looks like we are growing pot." LOL, go knock on their door and ask if they would like to buy some chameleon dung since it makes for a great high.

PHEve May 08, 2005 08:29 AM

why some of us are not social as far as (neighbors) LOL
Have to be careful, Some people do not have a life, and pry into others (buisness)

I'm glad it all worked out, as stupid as you were made to feel, from your crazy ordeal, can you imagine, how STUPID that neighbor felt when they told her/him the lights were for lizards!

Ahahhahahahah SERVES THEM RIGHT ! BET THEY WILL THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY REPORT NEXT TIME !

o.k. I slept on it and I'm not soo mad anymore. I guess I was just upset because the people who called lived a block away and all the people on my block are really good friends, so I'm not sure how much socializing I have to do in this town to get the reputation of a non-drug associated person!! Oh well, I guess I shouldn't act to crazy all the time and people won't think I'm on drugs.

This is pretty funny especially since you live in one of the more "progressive" states I remember decades back when indoor gardening had a bit of an explosion and many of use had grow lights (growing LEGAL plants - lol!) and there was a period of time when cops and informants were to look for any windows/homes showing this "unusual" glow and they would then go and question all SORTS fo people! Organic Gardening magazine followed this for quite a while and wrote articles about some of the "growers"... I recall one such story about a grandmother raising African Violets! lol!!

Your next encounter with the offending neighbor should prove interesting. Maybe bring Stitch over for a visit But you know, I am quite surprised that the police told you who had reported this - it is usually confidential.

He has a contact high! He will just climb right on you because you have his cage so filled with pot plants and he is so stoned from chewing on the leaves!
I am just kidding but I better cover up my windows! My house glows like a blue neon light from all the UVB bulbs in there!

FEENIEE May 09, 2005 04:51 PM

Contact High? Heck, he is the one rolling them up! I forgot to tell you I'm running a sweat shop here and Stitch and Rana are my little workers, Stitch tests the product before it goes out for distribution and Rana sews the hemp cloths! Just kidding, but really, cover your window's or put a sign out in your front your yard " Reptiles Raised Here" It's really embarrassing.

Oh I've had the same problem a couple of times, once it was the county sheriff seeing the strange glow from my free range melleri room. I can't really blame him though. Here was this remote house, windows glowing with odd lights framed in long slender leaves (Ficus alli) for long hours especially in winter. I can understand his curiosity. He drove by the house a few times obviously wondering. So, I finally strolled up to the car and introduced myself and asked if he was looking for something. Actually I always enjoyed an excuse to talk chams. I also think it is in our best interest to educate anyone we can about responsible exotics keeping. He asked about the plants so I gave him a tour of the setup. He was totally nice and professional about it. We chatted for a while and parted on good terms. I liked knowing he understood, and if any of my other neighbors ever called about it he could explain fully.

First off, let me say I'm very sorry you had to go under police scrutiny for your 'suspicious activities'. I couldn't begin to count the time I've been harrassed by police for nothing other than the color of my skin (racial profiling).
That being said, we should be glad to know that there is a neighbor in your vicinity that cares enough to call the police whenever (s)he sees something unusual. Yes, that neighbor lives a ways off and was probably just a busybody. In all honesty though, this is probably the sort of neighbor I would want around when prowlers startcasing neighborhoods for targets or if a known sex offender was to move in the neighborhood.
Happy Mother's Day everyone!

...having lived in Boston for 14 years the neighbors in the building made sure we knew one another and would often let one know if we'd be away so they could keep an eye on things. Having moved to rural NH 7 years ago I still have that "watch out for the neighbors" thing but sometimes feel like I am being nosey - but it really is just an awareness.

On another note...it was weird to read "I couldn't begin to count the time I've been harrassed by police for nothing other than the color of my skin (racial profiling)." I never even made an assumption from your name what "color" your are! Not that it would matter to me anyway. One of the neat things about cyberspace is that unless you see a photo of someone you really have no idea what ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, sometimes even gender. It makes a nice place for "everyone to get along" because what we have in common are our animals. It is really sad that we cannot take this with us into the real world. OK, don't want to go off into some philosophical tangent

Yeah . . . I had neighbors across the street a couple years ago that reported us to the city and complained that our front lawn was too messy and made the whole street look "unattractive" (fall was just starting and there were like 10 leaves on the ground!) Anyway, we had some guy come to our house and gave us a letter that demanded we clean the mess up or else they'd do something.

My girlfriend was p*ssed so she picked up the leaves and picked some more dead ones from the tree and dumped them in the front of that old hags house and then reported her to the city! lol

The neighbors hate us . . .

lol
