Eggs are stuck...what should I do?

heavensentherps May 08, 2005 10:53 AM

Well, my female laid her eggs today. For some reason, she didn't lay them in her egg box. They are under her paper towels (her substrate) stuck to the floor. For the time being I have put a damp cloth over then and watched the temp and humidity, and it's just what it would be in the incubator. Still, I would like to get them out and put them in the real incubator. I tried to dampen the area around the eggs, but had no luck. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove "stuck" eggs? I am going to try the water thing again.. but if that doesn't work I'm not sure what I'll do. They are both fertile and I would like them to stay that way..lol

Thanks for the help,
Heavensent Herps

I've had some eggs stick to the bottom of tupperware tubs, if you work at them (pull/twist) slowly, they tend to disconnect fairly easy. I haven't ripped an egg yet, they are pretty durable.

Lucky you that they are fertile... all my females that have laid outside the bins, have laid infertile eggs.

Good luck!

Yikes! I'm sorry that happened to you.

You said that they broke, were they really hard/dry? I've never had an egg break on me before.. I've tried opening a couple by hand, and they only stretched - I had to use cuticle scissors to open them (curious what was inside).

I know you are probably pretty bummed out, but everything happens for a reason.. perhaps these just weren't meant to be? I know that sounds harsh. I'm sorry that happened to you today. Hopefully the next one's will be PERFECT.

Wow.. That's hard to hear!!!

Usually, the problem is that the females lay the eggs on the bottom of the laying box, so they stick to that.. and, of course, the solution for THAT is to cut out the lay box around the eggs & then stick them in the incubator as is. But to the bottom of the actual habitat?

My 1st idea would not have been to try twisting them off - for exactly the reason that happened to you.
I believe one suggestion I heard a while back was to put veggie or olive oil (Are those toxic to the eggs, though??? I can't remember) on the floor right around where the eggs are, as well as the very bottoms of the eggs themselves. The oil should soften the eggs back up just enough to take them out.

People who know better, please correct me if I'm wrong!

Better luck next time!!!!

Sometimes I've had the eggs stick to the bottom of the laybox. Since the plastic is flexible, I've had no problem bending/twisting the laybox and the eggs just pop right off.
