Breeding Questions?

Lacrosseboss18 May 08, 2005 11:02 AM

I have a male and female leos which i would like to breed.

My first question is concerning their weight. The female is about 55g. Should i wait anylonger or is it ok to go ahead and breed her? My male is also around 55g. Is he ok weight to breed? I dont want to do anything to damage either one of the geckos. I want to do whats best for them.

My next question is, is it too late in the breeding season to put my male and female together. They have never been introduced. Infact they have only laid eyes on eachother once.

If i were to breed them i wouldnt like to keep the male and female in the same tank for longer then needed. Do i allow them to mate once and then take the male out of the females cage? Do i leave him in there for 24hours more then 24 hours?

For a cage setup i was thinking, 20 gallon tank, one hide on the cool side and a lay box on the hot side. I would use a undre tank heater to heat the enclosure. I would have water, mealworms and a calcium dish ALWAYS available.

Thanks
Joseph

Additional Questions?

Should i feed my female a pinkie?

Also for the hatchlings. I have read that Crickets are the best food to start them off on. Is this true? How hard then is it to get them to eat mealworms?

Thansk again

I wouldn't reccomend feeding her a pinkie. While they do fatten them up, they are hard to digest and can carry parasites.

A good feeder insect to fatten females up, is silkworms. 1 silkworm has as much nutrients as 3-5 crickets. They put weight on my females very quickly. You can get them from silkwormfarm.com

You can feed them crickets, but I would have a bowl of mealworms available at all times.

Those weights sound good.

I think they will breed at this time of year. THe eggs, however, might not be fertile since this will be her first clutch.

I would keep them together until you see them breed, then I would seperate them. It depends how long it takes them to breed. I think 24 hours is a little short, I'd say atleast 2-3 days.

That setup sounds great.

Don't forget to dust her mealworms with calcium w/ d3 once a week.

Good luck!
