catching ants in Vegas for Horned lizard.

west May 08, 2005 11:05 AM

ANybody know how to build an ant trap or where to order ants for a wild caught horned lizard?

Someone dropped one off at a local pet store that they caught. Obviosly the best solutioin is to reurn it to the wild, but the guy at the store wants to see if he can get it to feed.

Will they eat any other insects?

Sometimes they will eat small crickets. Really depends on the lizard.

They will eat small insects like crickets temporarily but they MUST have a steady diet of predominantly ants or they will perish. I remember there being a company in Utah, St George maybe, which was selling ants (minus any queens). I found them on Kingsnake.com. I have never dealt with them but you should try to find a mail order supply. If the expense is to limiting you need to find a home for your horned lizard. If it was caught locally and has not been in captivity very long you might be able to turn it loose. NV law prohibits the release of any long term captives.

I had a horned lizard when I was young, bought it from someplace in Texas. I used to go out and get a shovel full out of an ant hill and drop it in a gallon jar. Only fill about half to two thirds. These were the red and black variety, don't know what you have in Vegas. Keep them fed and watered and they should thrive. Just like a store bought ant farm only home made. Barring that, I would take it out and put it on/near an ant hill and let it eat till it lost interest. Hope this helps.
