Chocolate Bannana California king

bluerosy May 08, 2005 01:24 PM

Don Shores produced these and I am very pleased the way these are turning out. I took these pics last year and they are more so impressive i had to post them again. i will take updated pics shortly and post them.

Just want to give Don Shores props for a producing a very impressive Cal king...and i had about all of the morphs at one time or another.

Female:

male:

Chocolate Bannanas
Don bred a bannana cal king he got from John Ruiz to a female DH for snow he got from Mark bell. The first yr he produced a Chocolate Bannana. In the second yr he bred the choc male to a albino bannana female and produced 3 chocolate bannanas and 3 Bannana DHs. Last yr he produced 4.8 chocolates and 5 normal bananas.

Nice, I got some from Don last year and the year before. The confusion is in the terminology. In that statement it mentions "Snow" which is not a viable term for cal kings. "Snow" in other species (ie. corn snakes) refers to a snake that is displaying two recessive genes at the same time (amel & anery). With that definition, there ARE NO SNOWS IN CAL KINGS. Also Steve Osborne uses the term "Snow" for his High Whites. His use of the term "Snow" is not correct. I am assuming that the genetics that are being referred to in the CHOCOLATE BANANAS ("Snow" is "Blizzard", which is a cal king displaying 2 recessive genes at the same time (albinism & melanism) - correct?

My female Chocolate Banana won't be big enough to breed until next year, my male Chocolate Banana did not breed the larger female sibling that is from his clutch. She is a banana. So I bred her to a male that I produced a couple of years ago THAT IS A DOUBLE HET for albinism & melanism. I also bred him to 2 of his sibling females that are double hets. I wonder if any Chocolate Bananas will pop out?

I know what you are saying about the term "snow" being incorrect. I copied the decription down as it came from Don. I should have made that correction before coping it here.

So, in this case, what do you think the term "snow" is referring too?

Thanks

I am not sure what Mark Bell meant when he sold the snake to Don Shores. My guess would be he meant a blizzard.

I think Kerby is right in that I was calling a snow which was probably a blizzard. I know when I got some others fromthe clutch some we light patterned animals and some had now pattern with pink eyes. Snow does get confusing sometimes. I think what Steve Osborne calls snow cal kings are actually just high whites. Here is a pic of some chocolate bananas. Don

I'm not sure what the "banana" part is, but they sure are pretty snakes. I think the banana would be albino. The part that's really interesting, I think, is the "chocolate" part. I believe that's a "melanistic" mutation, from the black-belly snakes of n. CA. I don't know if that's provable or not, but as long as the characteristics are there, I'll be happy. Looking forward to getting a pair.

Two years ago I bred my Albino High White male to a Mendota female and produced double hets (albinism & melanism). This year I am breeding 1.2 from that clutch to each other. I should get albinos, melanistics, normals, and 1/16 should be a blizzard. I do believe since the albino I used was almost patternless then the melanistics that pop out should be almost patternless (ie Chocolate Bananas). I also used my double het male and bred it to a banana female from the same clutch that Chocolate Bananas came from (Don Shores' stock).

Also next year I will breed 1.1 of the Chocolate Bananas together. They should also both be possible het for albinism, so I might not get 100% Chocolate Bananas. Could still get albinos and blizzards.

The babies from that albino high-white male should be nice, as that's an awesome king. Good luck with the choc. bananas too and keep us posted
