Housing chucks outside

casesilva May 08, 2005 01:44 PM

Hi,

I have a nice screen cage that I was going to put outside for my chuck for the day. It gets too cold at night for him to stay out. I just wanted him to get nice sunlight. What should the outside temps be to be warm enough?

Thanks,

Casey

I keep my chucks outside year 'round. Even in the winter when So Cal. temps get down into the 50's, I'll see them piled up on the big rock together or seperately. I've read on this forum before that they have been spotted sunning in freezing or near freezing temps. I don't know if I would put a "house chuck" out in those conditions, but the natives do live in higher elevation (4,000' ) areas that get can snow.

I keep my "house chucks" outside. I live in central Illinois, so I have to wait until May before I even think about it. We can still have crazy weather changes, so I'm always ready to bring them in if I need to. I've been lucky that that pair has adapted so well to being outside or inside.

My chucks have been outside for about four days. It has been getting up into the lower to upper 70's on some days and 80's another. It gets cool (40's) at night. It has been pretty variable lately.

Thanks!!
I should be able to put him outside this week. It should be near 70 during the day and I think Thursday will be 71. I live in the East Coast so it never will be a year round thing.

Thanks again.

You'll see a huge behavioural change, so be on your gaurd and don't let them escape!
