Undigested Skin

gpmonaghan Jul 11, 2003 05:37 PM

We're the owners of the unwell leo where the vet said "they just don't do well in captivity". Hasn't eaten for almost a month, runny stools, vet gave worm meds. and no change. Yesterday he shed his skin and ate most of it. Last night he did a poop which was very abnormal and this morning it looked like he had done three poops, but two of the three looked like his skin undigested. Has anyone seen that before?

We're so concerned about him. Vet says can't do a proper fecal unless it's fresh but how can we do that when he only poops at night? We just don't know what else to do with him.

BTW bought at Petco....grrrrrrrr as I reflect on the various "professional advice" I received from them on my visits prior to making the purchase it makes my blood boil, because it was most so inaccurate and many customers I'm sure seek no further information. After they sent me home with a baby leo, giant crickets, a bag of sand that clearly stated on the packet that it was unsafe for small reptiles, a basking light because they need to sit out all day and bask in the sunlight, no vitamins etc. etc.. Anyway I ended up doing a lot of research and reading but only after it started to occur to me that they didn't have a clue what they were talking about. What bothers me is that other customers may take them at their word and the poor creature suffers. Don't the Humane Society have any legal leverage to stop this inappropriate treatment of creatures!!!! Sorry for the ranting but I'm so infuriated.

The vet actually said that??? Of course CAPIVE BRED leos do well in captivity! Or they wouldn't be captive bred! If you can, find a new vet and FAST. When my leo Beanie was sick with parasites I sat up the night before her vet appointment until she did a poop. Put the poop in a plastic bag and (this will sound weird) put it in the fridge until you go to the vet the next day.
Yeah, ignorant petcos (some aren't bad) and other places like that piss me off too. I have actually thought of calling the human society, but because they are chains, they must have some legal document somewhere that would prevent you from actually winning a case. Actually, I was at a pretty bad petco the other day and actually discouraged a couple people from buying some baby leos there (YES! Point for ME!). I started talking to them and they had no idea what they were talking about so I told them that these leos weren't being cared for correctly and literally went over leo care with them. They left gecko-less but thanking me. There's really nothing we can do except educate people and pray to the celestial Powers that these places go out of business.
