Nice Rat Snakes! Looking at your field report, looks like a fun day of herping. I was just curious, the prarie kings you found look almost patternless. Is that the normal coloration from there? I'm in MO, but all the ones we find here have a distinct pattern. The only pic I could find right now is a juvenile, but they pretty much hold on to the pattern as adults. Tom Magers

Thanks Tom,
Yep the prairies here get a gun metal gray overcast to them and some lose their saddles completely. They are pretty variable here, some keep very distinct markings, but still have the overcast, and others lose them and some even take on two stripes running one on each side dorsal and lateral to the spine. Here are some pics...

This one is a dark specimen.....

This one has the stripes.....

Here is one I have in my collection. She is C/B from a gravid Todd county snake and seems to be holding her pattern very well. Although she is gettin the signature gun metal gray overcast on her last 1/3 of her body....

And here is one from last year that was found in Hart county. It has retained alot of its pattern as well.

So in all here they are pretty variable. I am myself from MO. Grew up there in SE MO. Near Poplar Bluff.

I know what you mean about the prairies, the first one I saw here I was trying to figure out what it was!!! The black rat snakes are the same here as well. Not what a Missourian is used to for sure!!!

Here is a KY black rat, I have had him from hatchling and he is getting huge!

Not at all the the black rats I was used to over there in MO!! LOL
