Never see my Nose Be drink?

whitey4311 May 08, 2005 05:27 PM

I hardly ever see my nose be drink. I spray him down with a spray bottle and see him lick his lips sometimes and feed him silk worms sprayed down with water as well. When he chomps on them I shoot more water in his mouth but i never see him freely take water drops from his tree. I have a huge set up and have mister in it that are on 7 times a day at 5 min each time. There is always water available so I dont know if maybe while I am not home he drinks what he needs and is done for the day or what. I maybe watch him for a small fraction of the day so it is possible I just am not lucky enough to see it. He is very healthy and has normal excretions on a normal basis and he is strong and thrives in his cage eating crickets that I dust and gut load with are very expensive home made formula so he is very far from being mal-nutriented.
On the other hand my 5-6 month old Sambava is in the same set up on the same suppliments and that little guy was taken from his baby cage and placed in this huge one with some concern. I moitored him closely and to my suprise he cup feed crickets and takes water all the time. He thrived faster and sooner in the big cage than my nose be did. The nose be took some coaxing to feed from the cup as compared to the baby sambava who just ran up to it and went nuts like fishing in a bucket. Their attitudes are greatly different in that the nose be is melo and you can walk up to him or hold him and the sambava will his and open his mouth. If I remember correctly the nose be did this in his early days too so I dont think this has anything to do with the fact or not drinking.
Any tips or tricks? I know I can force him to drink as I have been but I would love to see him drink freely from the leaves. My vield is the same way and I never see him drick but again I dont stare at the chams all day long to observe them so there is no way to tell for sure. All I can end in saying is that all 3 are very healthy and have no problems to date. I think I might just be overly concerned and comparing him to my other chams but I know they all have their own personalities.

Hey!
Dont worry, my adult male veiled is the exact same way. You see, as you mentioned, every chameleon has a different personality. The more daring types have no problem eating or drinking in front of people, but the more shy and secluded feel more comfortable when all humans have left the room. You may also stimulate them to drink, by spaying water on leaves right next to them, or holding droplets or water close to their snout. I really wouldnt be too concerned about this issue, though. As long as he is not deyidrated (you can tell by sinking of the eyes, saggy or droopey skin, less active, and unusually dry feces) he should be just fine. I would not impede on his daily life by trying to force him to drink though, just see how things go. Hope this has been of some help!

Perfect, thank you. I will stop shooting water into his mouth this week and see how he is doing by watching all the above mentioned daily. About spraying water I do that all the time and when I am not home he still has the automated misters that go on 5 in at a time 7 times a day. So finding water sure isnt the concern. I was just being overly cautious during his younger years. I was the same way with my vield and now that he is 4 yrs old and super strong I let him do his thing.
