Male Dragons That Won't Breed?

lemondrop7980 Jul 11, 2003 05:45 PM

I Have 2 Male Dragons One Being 2 Years Old And The Other Is 3 Years Old. Both Are Proven Breeders, But Now For Some Reason They Won't Breed. They Go Through All The Mating Things (ex: Biting The Nape Of The Neck And Chasing The Female,) But They Will Not Get There Tail Under The Female? Does Anyone Have Any Suggestions? Thanks!

Are your males housed together? Are they housed with the females? Were they brumated?

Well 2 Of The 3 Males Are House By Themselves In Seperate Cages. The Ages Of Them Are 3, 2, 2.5. They Were All Hybernated This Past Winter. They Will Go Through THe Normal Male Acting Stages As Far AS Bobbign ANd Bitting THe Neck And Gettin On Top Of The Female But They Will Not Push Their Tail Under uner Their Ladies. THe Females Are Both 18 Months Old So They Are Very Ready To Breed. Just Why Won't They Mate?

Age alone isn't the primary factor in breeding. Just because the female has hit a certain age doesn't mean she's ready. We've got a female that just turned 2 in June, and she's been refusing our big male Arnie (who turns 2 in October). He does the same thing as your males. He does the head bobbing, grabs hold of her neck, then just lays there.

I've spoken to a couple of big breeders, and they think it's simply due to the female not being responsive to the male. Either because she doesn't feel ready to breed, or she just doesn't like the male. Either way, the male isn't going to force the issue, and that's as far as it goes.

Last year when you brumated them, did you brumate the female too? When did she go to sleep and when did she wake up?

The Females Like I Said Are Both 18 Months. As Far As Hybernation. I Usually Don't Put Them Down For A Winter Their First Year. The Females Do The Bobbing ANd THe Arm Waving ANd Then Once The Males Are On Top They Kinda Give In But THe Males Don't Do Anything

If they haven't brumated yet ever, it's possible that it could be getting a little late in the season for them.

How is their general activity level? Have they slowed down in eating at all?
