Any Herping outside of San Antonio?

billykiesel May 08, 2005 06:58 PM

Has anyone done any herping outside of the San Antonio Area. Like Braunig Lake, Choke Canyon or other place. Does anybody know of a good place to go outside of San antonio?
Thanks

Yeah Ive herped Choke canyon a few times. In the late summer / fall, the roads around it, especially 16, are great places to see atrox, corals, bullsnakes, checkered garters, leopard frogs, couch's spadefoots, and the occasional indigo. Have a good time!

At one time, Bexar county had one of the highest diversity of herps in Texas. Kings, milks and even indigos were found there. Very, very little habitat remains, just isolated lots and thin ribbons of habitat along creeks and the SA river. You can still find a fair amount of garters, ribbons and Texas rat snakes though around those creeks and flood zones that remain. To find the more interesting stuff you need to use some gas and head south. I have recently started going back to some good areas around Cotulla. Go to terraserver.com and it will help you locate roads with habitat around them. You will notice that about 90% of S Tex is cleared and bears the scars and pattern of man and very little pristine habitat is left. Enjoy it while we can!

i would go south but i get peranoid about them drug traffikers and drug growers not to mention them desperate immagrants. Last I heard Laredo was getting real bad with that stuff.
Thanks

I have personally never had a situation with bad guys but that is my #1 concern when out in the boondocks since I go by myself often. And people ask me "aren't you scared of getting bit by a snake?" -lol- People scare me much more than any snake. I did have one time where I saw an indigo on the road and turned around to check it out...then some idiot in a truck goes out of his way to try and run it over and almost hit me in the process. Luckily, the indigo barely made it off the road in time. I gave the truck driver an appropriate hand gesture!

Maybe you should have demonstrated a full moon instead of the hand gesture. That is much easier to figure out through a REAR view mirror (pun intended).
