Juvi crested that has alignment problems

particle man May 09, 2005 03:27 PM

i have a baby crested that pulls to the right. he can walk fine on branches when he takes his time, but if he's starteled or is hunting crix he kind of curls over and sometimes flips himself.

he's had this since he hatched, has had a good diet w/ calcium, lived w/ 4 other cresties that hatched around that time and none of them have any problems. he eats baby food and even manages to hunt crix w/ little problem. i've moved him over to his own 10gal w/ a 60w lightbulb on one side (hoping the heat might help, but trying not to overdo it).

it kind of looks like it's something to do w/ his eyes, altho that could be compensation for whatever the real prob is. his pupils are slow to close in light, and still dont go too small, like he's trying to see more?

since he eats and grows and sheds, i'm not too worried about it for now, but if it's something more serious i'd like to know, and if it's fixable, i'd like to help the curly little fella

The prosencephalon is a portion of the brain. Damage to it can cause circling towards the side with the lesion on it.

There is someone on the crested gecko forum for yahoo that also has a Crestie with a prosencephalic lesion.

Depending on what the cause of the lesion is, it might stay the same or get worse. I would seriously doubt that it would get better as neural tissue does not have the ability to regenerate.

As long as your little Crestie is doing well and finding food I would just make sure that there isn't a lot of stuff in the cage for him to fall off of and leave it at that. Personally, I wouldn't suggest breeding this animal.

Hope that helps,

Genevieve

yea, i wont be breeding him, he's just gonna live out his life and enjoy the crix/cgd as long as he can. his cage has alot of climbing areas of different sizes and i've seen him jump around from limb to limb, doing little flips jumping around like crazy, but he manages to get where he wanted, it may not be graceful, but he hits the branch he was aiming for and sticks! he seems to be compensating for his handicap
