Herping FL end of July

axbromley May 09, 2005 03:49 PM

Is it worth it? I will be coming into Miami on business and I am wondering if there is anything moving in the Ft. Meyers area for road cruising end of July. I know there will be a mosquito or two, but how about herps? Any advice from our FL herping brothers?

Thanks for the input!

Right off of Naples (about 30 minutes) you have tons of nice spots. Granted a bit of nice weather, you'll definetly wanna drop by Fakahatchee Strand Preserve (as long as you're not going to collect) and also there are several spots around tamiami trail in Big Cypress where you can park your car and walk down the path, I've seen all sorts of snakes there, specially some really nice species around loop road aka "snake road".

check out this map... you won't be far from this area.

Horvilleur, right those are good places to see some nice reptiles. But as he mentioned those are both protected areas and not only will you see the presence of Fish and Wildlife out there but the local police also know the laws pertaining to collecting as well.
I was out there on 5/7 and saw 2 nice Red rats, 5 racoons, 1 rabbit, 2 big owls, a Black bear!, 3 DOR Red rats, a DOR Scarlet King and a bunch of BUGS!!!!!!!!!! and a Fish and Game guy we talked to about the bear.

Good Luck and take a camera!!!!!!
