housing for Pelomedusa subrufra

Hello,
I have an African helmeted turtle (Pelomedusa subrufra). I have been housing it in a 40 gallon aquarium with a half land, half water setup with a Fluval submersible filter. The current setup really isn't working. I was wondering if anyone else out there kept this species and what their setups are like. Any input would be great. The major problem I'm running into is I've noticed that it really enjoys burrowing in sand, which I think is what keeps ruining my filters.

if it is an adult (5 - 8 inches)then i'd say your major problem is that the tank is much too small.
When they are healthy these are active turtles that like to crawl around on the bottom in shallow water (escpecially at dusk and early evening) and search for food. They make a big poop mess and they are messy eater as well.
I'd say the thing to do is get a large plastic stock tank or preform plastric pond and put some logs into it.
If you plan to keep it long term in a tank i'd go with somehting nth 100 gallon range.

How warm is the water?
They sometimes burrow when they water is dirty or the enviroment is too warm.
Is it eating well?
What are you feeding it?
