Monitor or Uro???

jazzmachine May 09, 2005 05:34 PM

Hi all. I will also be posting this messege in the Monitor forum as well. Just want to get everybody's opinion on something. I'm looking at getting a couple lizards in the near future. Just wondering what people would recommend either a Uromastyx or a Monitor. I know there are many "sub-classes" of each, just in general is what i'm lookiing at. I assure you I am no "newbie" with any of this. I currently house many species of pyhons, as well as chameleons. Just looking for something a little different. I love both of these guys, just can't really decide. I definitely have the space covered for them as well. So that isn't an issue at all. Any and all opinions are welcome. And thanks in advance for everything.

so most if not all of us will say monitor.

I have both uros and monitors. There are things i like about both of them.

It all comes down to personal choice really.

Uros are really nice, but they are more of a simple type reptile. A monitor is more complex, its like comparing a fish to a dolphin. Monitors have more to offer if you have the time for them, Uros are more like a tortoise(just my opinion)not bad or anything, just more like having fish then having a dolphin. If you have the time and space a monitor is generally more interesting although Uro's can also be exciting if you get into the whole high color ones that look amazing.

Monitors are arguebaly the smartest reptiles. I think they are the Chimp of their species. When they look at you, you can almost see them thinking. Theres just something about them that has drawn me closer than snakes, turtles, or any other types of lizards such as Iggys or Beardies. My advise is if you have the resources and time, get a monitor. It has been extremly rewarding so far with my short time with them and I have kept many reptiles over the years.

I keep both. Uros are cool; the way they will sit and watch you with such intelligent eyes. But monitors are much more active and more fascinating to watch, But then, monitors are more work than uros, in my opinion. And they will definately take up more space.

Do some reading about the various species of monitor to get an idea of the size range, and husbandry requirements. In my opinion, ackies are the best for your first monitor. Get at least two, if your getting ackies. Watching them interact is half the fun.

Get busy researching, and, cute as baby niles are, DO NOT get a nile.
