How to sex my crested

jen_jen May 09, 2005 06:22 PM

I have a crested that is almost 4 months old. I want to get another sometime soon, but i have heard that males will fight, unless they are raised together or introduced young. I'm wondering how old is too old to introduce a new male to mine (if it is a male) and what size should the new crested be.

First of all, from my understanding there is only one person I know that can sex a crested that young and that is Allen R. Cresteds usually aren't 100% sexed until 10 or so months (sometimes males drop their bulges really late and your "female" is now a male). Second, I don't personally believe in keeping more than one animal in a cage unless mating. I understand that some people as well as breeders do so, but I feel that housing multiple specimens together is too great of a rish--undo stress on the inhabitants and possibly sickness being passed from one to the other rather rapidly. You should also adhere to common quarintine procedures of minimum 30 day isolation from other specimens. Just my 2 cents. Don't hesitate if you have any other questions.

from all that i've read, you can't keep males together unless you have a very large cage. They may get along fine when young, but once they start to mature, they will start to fight.

I successfully kept a group of male cresteds for a year (around 4 months old until 16 months old). The group consisted of three males, all approximately the same size and age, none of which had ever seen or been near any of my females. The got along just fine. That said, I wouldn't trust any male gecko to cohabitate with another male gecko after the introduction of a female. That's asking for trouble .

hi OsamaBin...you know me as sircat )

I wait a minimum of 90 days before introducing new specimens...I replied with pics to your newer post...I also don't really trust sex until they're about 10 months...but I want to get an 8x and see if that does help sexing them earlier

I have a few times kept pairs that hatch together...for 2 months at most and then do not put adults back together until they're completely adult...I had a bad experience putting a sub pair together and don't risk it anymore
