my female beardie is doing strange things

SecretSReptiles May 09, 2005 06:23 PM

Hi, my female beardie I just got about 6 weeks ago. She's about 10-11 months old and she's doing something strange. She's been digging around her cage. Like she nesting. She hasn't been around any males, or any other dragon. Could she be laying infertel eggs? She's been getting a tad bit large, but not too large. I felt underneath her belly, and felt little soft lumps.
Please, could anyone tell me whats going om with her?

Where did you get her from? There is always the chance that she was with a male where ever you got here from, but they could be duds too.

I got her from a gentle man at a reptile show in Pottstown. I forgot who he was. He had her in with only other females. I would think she's too small to breed. Won't breeding her too young stunt her growth?

It sounds like she has unfertilized eggs in her. This can happen even if she was all alone, but I see it alot when females are kept together and not bred by a male.

She should be fine, but she may lay more than one clutch of bad eggs for you. You never know though, the "gentle man" might have had her in with a male and you might get good eggs. Get the incubator ready just in case.

Just curious, what did this "gentle man" look like? I was at that show and saw a bunch of lunatics. LOL

I think his company was called "just Lizards"? He was all the way in the back next to the people selling cages. He was at the NARBC show last year in Nov.

I lost his number, and I can seem to find his company anywhere in the classifieds.

It is very possible she has infertile eggs. Best thing to do is prepare an egg laying bin. Basically a good sized rubbermaid container with mixed soil/vermiculate and some water so it all clumps well and holds it's shape but isn't dripping wet. Use a basking lamp to warm the sand up and put your dragon in. If she is ready to lay eggs (typically they stop eating a day or two before laying), she will lay them. You can also dig a partial hole to help her out.
