Heating Question

ta2edskin May 09, 2005 09:53 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get a 5 watt bulb from. I just got a new cage from BARRS its 12x12x16 it is for my gtp and I have tried a 25w red bulb and a 15w clear bulb and they are both too hot for it. If I cant get a bulb that watt can I use a small heat pad? Thanks Steve

I'm not so sure about a 5 watt bulb, but you can get 7.5 watt bulbs at Wal-mart, Lowe's, or Home Depot. They are small round bulbs about the size of a golf ball in clear or white. They can be expensive and don't last as long as a typical bulb, but they do make a great light/heat source without worry of overheating. I've used them for several years during the summer months.

I'd go with a heat pad or better yet a heat panel used with a thermostat.

I have the same cage for a little GTP. With an overhead heat source the cage does not give the GTP much room to get out of the heat to thermoregulate and GTPs will usually seek the highest perch over temp. I put a small heat pad on a rheo outside along one side of the cage at one end of the highest perch. This provided enoug warmth but the GTP can scoot over to the cool side of the perch for comfort. Bill.
