Looking in California

BrazGirl May 09, 2005 10:31 PM

I'm new to this board and I mostly joined so I could get as much information as possible. =) I'm looking into owning one or two BRBs in the near future, babies, probably gonna look in the Sacramento reptile show for them since not many people breed/sell in the Bay Area.
Do BRBs do well living together as babies and growing? I'm dancing between just one or two. Are they the type to get lonely?
Has anyone had great success with a breeder or shop that may be at the 2005 Sacramento Reptile show I could talk to? Or anyone else they could recommend? Any California owners?
How large of a terrarium should I be looking into when dealing with two? What are the other recommended enclosures?
I already own two corn snakes that are adolescent and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with BRBs getting along with other breeds of snake? I wouldn’t house them together, of course.

Thanks for all the help.
If anyone has any pictures of their babies I could see?
_CLin

BrazGirl,
East Bay Vivarium (EBV) often has very nice BRB's (I got my male from them). They are not inexpensive however. The Sac reptile show is pretty good and fun to attend. Last year I did'nt notice many BRB's but there where some high end hypo's being offered by EBV and also some normals.
I currently keep four BRB's housed together in a large enclosure and have not experienced any problems to date but this is not recommended. It is important to feed individually in a separate enclosure. There are a number of posts dealing with housing multiple snakes and it would be worth while to do a search and read others experiences. I would not house BRB's together until they are adults.
I would not hazard a guess as to whether snakes get lonely. Sometimes I find a couple piled together but mostly they keep to themselves. I do see behavior at night that is hard to explain; they seem to be interacting. I've never seen aggressive behavior. At this time it appears I have two gravid snakes and the larger female (mother of the other) will displace the other by simply moving into the spot and forcing the other to leave. Fortunatly my enclosure has multiple hot spots for them to use. If your going to house two adults you'll need an enclosure at least 4x2x2 and I would recommend larger. BRB's love to climb, give them the opportunity to do so. In a large, tall enclosure (mine is 6'x4'x3') I recommend a temperature range of 70-90. Most of the time they hang out where the temps are in the mid 70's. In a smaller enclosure you'll probably want to decrease the upper range about 5 degrees. Read Jeff Clarks care sheet at the top of this forum for detailed info.
I would not let them interact with other species.
Good luck,
Paul

I agree with the last post. The East Bay Vivarium is probably the most reputable reptile retailer in the San Francisco Bay Area. They have been doing business since 1975. There are many knowlegeable people who work there and they will stand behind any animal that they sell. Enjoy your search,

Mike

Hi, if you're looking for BRB's in the bay area I am a breeder. Last year had 83 babies, recognise several of the users who post lon this forum. Looking good for this year, nlo babies yet but then again it's still early. My adults 2.7 have been off feed for a couple of months, only the males have eaten and only one time each. Typical for gravid females and also for the males (I think they smell the hormones). Expect babies anywhere from July (not typical) to September and even into October. I think they will be aq little towards the early side as I was better with the cooling period this winter.

Hey Randy, yeah, I feel a little dumb, never noticed there was a brb subgroup. Well better late then never.
