Suggestions for a cage

CaliGotPythons May 09, 2005 10:38 PM

so far im planing on building cages stacked on top of eachother

i was gonna build a 8'long x 2' high x 4' deep

and made out of all glass with double sliding doors and on top i was thinkin of building a similar cage and then on top of that a cage similar except 3 ft high and divided into half each for a jungle carpet python

so basically the whole dimensions would be 8'x 7'x4'

i was told that all glass might stress out my snakes???

so far i have an albino burmese python and 2 jungle carpet pythons

and plan on getting another albino burmese python

i planned on doing it all in glass so thus easily to clean and also moisture and what not

any suggestions or questions you have so you can better understand what im saying?

Nate

Sounds very cool in concept if i'm picturing it correctly.

A potential problem i can think of off the bat is that at feeding time you might have a whole bunch of snakes freaking each other out with movement prey scent floating around. Also they might make each other uncomfortable just by being able to constantly see one another. Possibly using some sort of frosting or opaque panels strategically placed would probably fix that though.

Best of luck and hopefully we'll see some pics.

Ohh BTW i dont feed any of my snakes in their cage, im against it just because i feel much safer and cleaner in a box or what not

ohh and i planned on covering so you could see through the sections needed where snakes could possibly see eachother

Thank you for you suggestions though Sanky

Well it sounds like you definitely have it under control lol.
Looking forward to seeing some pics when it's done.

For a burmese I don't like these dimensions. Burmese seem to always deficate along the back edge of any cage meaning you'll need to climb in on your belly to get to the back.

Also, since the cage so short relative to the depth you'll be exposing your face, arms and torso to a food response bite whenever you open the door. This cage will not be safe.

I would limit the depth of the cage to 30".

Regarding glass, it will be very, very heavy at those sized. Also not easy to make an all glass cage that large.

You should visit albinoburmese.com for cage ideas.

First I totally agree with chris'

Chris said it if you have to get in the cage bad bad idea expessially with a burm believe me I have one.

>>I would limit the depth of the cage to 30".

Make longer than that and your head needs to dip inside if you are short then you get the idea.

Very heavy at the size you are talking you would need 1/2" glass just to support itself let alone a large burm. A 4x8 sheet of 1/2" glass is over a 100pds. Figure that into your cage and each cage would weight over 400pds little heavy for just wanting something easy to clean.

My 2 Cents

1/4" plate or safety glass atleast by my supplier weighs 2.8lbs psf so a 4x8 sheet of 1/4' glass would weigh 89 lbs so as a idea a cage that size just in 1/4" glass would weigh around 400lbs give or take 10 lbs . so a 1/2" glass cage would be pushing around 700 lbs very easy.

The large enclosure i built for my buddies Argus in his shop has 96sf of 1/4" safety glass in it and is a wood frame with a wood bottom that cage measures 6x4x7 and total weight of it is around 380-400 lbs of cage !

if you want a full view cage i would suggest making a "framed unit and then install glass with clips to cover the inside of the cage on the sides and do a solid top & bottom with wood. you will be MUCh happier with the look and outcome of the cage VS a cage as you want to build .

alos forgot to mention I pay $5.50 sf for finished glass so imagine how $$$$ your cage would be to boot !

yeah i was think of covering the top bottom and back side(since it will be against a wall and i can just get a backround scene) in wood instead of glass and i don't know how much im going to have to pay for glass cause my uncle has his own business in glass and windows for houses and hes helping me build it and i might just get it free

THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!!

THANK YOU I TOTALLY DIDNT THINK OF THAT PART OF CLEANING

PLUS MY ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO BE 3 FT DEPTH ANYWAYS

OK THANKS ONCE AGAIN BUT I THINK YOUR TALKING ABOUT LIKE IF I FED IN THE CAGE WHICH I DONT THOUGH BUT YEAH I COULD SEE HOW IT COULD BE UNSAFE

YEAH I WAS THINKIN ABOUT WEIGHT SO IM STILL CONSIDERIN

DO YOU THINK 1/4 GLASS IS THICK ENOUGH TO RESTRAIN A BURM??

>>OK THANKS ONCE AGAIN BUT I THINK YOUR TALKING ABOUT LIKE IF I FED IN THE CAGE WHICH I DONT THOUGH BUT YEAH I COULD SEE HOW IT COULD BE UNSAFE

Feeding your burm outside the cage will help a lot as it will be less likely have a feeding response when you open the door. But I know people who only feed large constrictors in an external box who have still been bitten.

Don't build a burmese cage you have to lean into like that.

>>DO YOU THINK 1/4 GLASS IS THICK ENOUGH TO RESTRAIN A BURM??

I only built one truely large burmese cage. It was 12'x4'x5'. The piece of glass on the front was 10'x4' and 1/4" thick, BUT...

1) the glass was tempered

2) the glass was in one of those steel store-front frames that has a shock absorbing rubber bushing.

The cage was a permanent structure (it still stands today) so having this type of glass was practical. I'm not sure it will work for you.

Personally, I would not build a large burmese enclosure with glass, even if it were free.
