Lancaster cruising report 5-4-05

metalpest May 09, 2005 11:16 PM

I know, almost a week late, but my first trip of the year and it was a good one! The most I found in one night before this was 9, but we found 12 on this trip, 7 AOR and 5 DOR. Looks to be a good year! Cold night, weather.com said it was 66 F when we left the house, and it was windy and I was freezing. The great find of the night was the long nose snake, only saw a few last year, and most were babies, Id say this one was an average adult. Great coloration on it. There was a roadkill long nose on the way back not far from the first one. The other 10 we all mojave rattlesnakes, a typical find in this area (70 total last year, just over 50% of all snakes found in the area). The mojaves we found this year had high contrasting well defined patterns but seemed to have less green coloration than those previously found. Most were probably 2 years old, not very big. We did find one huge female, probably the largest Ive seen, she must have been 4', but we didnt measure her. Glad she didnt get hit, she was stretched out and moving slow on account of the cold.

Here are some pics:

Actually, I dont think that was the pic of the big one. Notice the rattle. The big one, as I recall, didnt have a well defined pattern, kind of faded. I dont think any pics came out good for her, sorry. I agree, good pic, taken by my girlfriend icedearthgoddess

Hope to hunt for some zonata with you sometime Jeff!

Check out this DOR Long Nose I found last night. This was on Sierra Hwy about 15 miles south of Palmdale. I drove past thinking Cal King but something told me to go back and take a closer look. Single row of ventral tail scales.

Notice the white scales inside the black bands, that helps give it away. I havent personally seen a long nose that low in red, but I have seen other pictures. Cool find there, too bad it was dead on road. I really liked finding the long nose, didnt see to many last year.
