mouth rot....continued

newguy88 May 09, 2005 11:36 PM

I decided to move my message up.. the reply's that i got said that a cottage cheese looking substance will form around the mouth... is this very noticable? like big clumps of cottage cheese or little tiny drops of cottage cheese, and if I do see some (which i dont) then can i swab that away and raise the temperature or does that mean that the mouthrot is developing and getting worse? (he also rubs his nose slightly, and hes not about to shed) any info would help, the reply's last time really helped, i will prob take him to the vet anyway though.. he has only eaten 1 fuzzy in the last month and a week.

It doesn't look like mouth rot from the pic, but only you are holding the snake.

An infection in reptiles doesn’t look like in mammals with puss; it is more like a white cottage cheese substance.

Mouth rot can be on the lip line, but it will usually be inside the mouth as well as on the lip in my experience.

Have you looked inside the mouth??

Most snakes will let you open their mouth with a soft instrument.

I use my finger, or a q-tip entered into the mouth like a horse bit, to look inside.

The size of the affected area depends on the cause of the infection.

It could start with a small pin spot area or a larger amount if it forms around a wound.

Hope that helps

Do not use the white cotton tip. Just the long plastic piece placed horizontally into the mouth to encourage the snake to open its mouth.

Do ALLWAYS go to a vet that is specialised in reptiles if you suspect any mouthrot or any sign of illness in your snake!
