Fawn's illness

the4thmonkey May 10, 2005 04:44 AM

Poor Fawn, still holding her mouth open a lot and having trouble swallowing. And yesterday I noticed one side of her lower "lip" was drooping a bit So I got on the phone and started calling every vet's office in town, each time being told that I would have to go to Albuquerque to find one who would see exotics. I was about at the last one in the phone book when I was told about a new practice, and that vet agreed to see Fawn.
She feels that Fawn's tongue and throat are swollen, probably due to an allergic reaction. Fawn got a steroid shot in her tail, poor baby. The vet will give her another on Thursday if I feel it has helped her. The vet didn't think it was the mineral oil or aloe vera that I used on her skin to help her during a bad shed, especially since it has been a while since she was exposed to either. The thought that I may have caused this makes me feel terrible. Today I will clean the terrarium out, even though nothing in their environment has changed.
All the other lizards are fine, and the vet said they can be just like people, one can react to something when most others will not. I really hope this works for her. If the swelling gets much worse it will cause her to suffocate. Has anyone had a lizard with an experience like this?

I have had two yellow head collared that had problems shedding. They got very lethargic, as if the skin was getting tight around their legs and bodies. I actually soaked them which allow me to get some skin off. I thought it had helped, but I think I really exposed their new skin to potential problems. My female's nostils got very red and she died a couple days later. The same thing happened to the male, but I did not try to help his skin. It's hard to say, but probably something you had no control over at all. You are doing your best, and that's all anyone can do, really.

I soaked Fawn, too, then rubbed her with a towel working the skin off bit by bit. And I put mineral oil or aloe vera on her at bedtime to help soften it, I thought. Those were the main ingredients in shed-relief products at the pet store. The skin did come off. She still has a patch on her chest, and some on her head which I am not touching for now. She sleeps with Otis and I know she rubbed stuff off on him, I guess he does not have allergies.

I hope this fixes her up! She has had a bad time pretty much since coming out of brumation. She's been a good girl about all the stuff she has had to go through, too.

so I scheduled her for another steroid shot on Thursday. She still opens her mouth but not as wide. She was quite active today and I saw her eat a mealworm and attempt to catch a cricket; she lost him, though. I've been buying some smaller ones for her but she always goes for the big ones anyway. I cleaned everything with a mild soap and water like the vet recommended. I keep it clean anyway and scoop everyday, now I am hoping she is not allergic to soap, too! And I hope this gets her over the hump and better because I doubt I could afford 2 steroid shots a weeks for her unless they will let me give it to her myself.
