well, i think the bigger girth snakes, like boas, will be to big for a 40 gallon breeder size tank. i was thinking of a hogg island boa myself. they have some girth from what i've heard but only get to like 4-5 foot.
How much experience do you have with other reptiles?
I reccomend the Ball python, the corn snake, or an eastern kingsnake. Good luck on your choice.

Be excellent to each other...and Party on dude!
In my opinion the best snake in a 40 gallon would be any of these: corn/rat/king/milk. All of these snakes will fit in that size cage at full size. Although none of them are naturally girthy(?), but I have heard that if you power feed them, they can get quite girthy.
