A good day for herping, temperatures around 80 degrees F. Went out around 6 p.m. with a buddy of mine, and went to one of my "ringneck spots" first. Found...
11 Shorthead Garter Snakes(Thamnophis brachystoma) - 2 Adults, the rest were 04' babies
5 Northern brown Snakes(Storeria dekayi) - 1 Adult, the rest were 04' babies
4 Common Garter Snakes(Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) - 2 03' Juveniles and 2 04' babies
The common garters were the best finds, still rare in my area, seems they are making a comeback. Found the 2 juveniles together under a rock, it was suspected they were a breeding pair, the one I managed to snag was a male.
Then went to another one of my spots. Found...
6 Shorthead Garter Snakes(Thamnophis brachystoma) - 5 Adults and 1 04' baby
1 Common Garter Snake(Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) - 04' baby
After I caught the above baby ^ there was a worm crawling around on the road, so I put the garter right near it, and it attacked the worm and attempted to eat it. Pretty cool, not too many snakes will eat that fast.
Not a bad day at all...
