umop_apisdn May 10, 2005 09:13 PM

i see all the sudden that 3 or 4 people are listing leaftails in the classifieds for about 2/3 the recent prices. i guess a huge shipment came in of cheaper geckos?

Too many people thought they could make money off of exploiting the CITES APP.2 decision. Seriously, there is no shortage at all. I don't know the quotas but I can say that some people are still trying to make some really big money on animals I can buy for 40 each. Phants.....$50, eban's $40. The only expensive ones are the fimbriatus and the lineatus. Henks are not on any of my lists.

Well... quotas this year ARE LOW!

Lined Leaf tailes are only 1000 this year

Fimbriatus, Phantasticus, Ebens and Mossy's are all at 2000 individuals per species

Henkels are 200

That is about 10,000 total leaf tails availble this year including the minimal captive bred ones.

For an animal as popular as these this really isn't many animals. They would be even more popular except for price and mortality rate.

The reason that so many people are having "sales" is because a major importer Zooilogical imports was having a super sale. Some have rummored it is because they are in money trouble... or they are just clearing inventory...

One way or the other I have a box commming tomorrow with Ebens Leafs at $35!!

Satanics were $40... but they only had males... sigh

Anyways if you ask me it was stupid for them to do this clearance as the exportation for madagascar HAS to be about done for this year. With the number that has already come there is no way there could be many more.

I hate to say it but I wouldn't expect any more leafs until January next year...

All I can say is BREED BREED BREED!!! That is the only way we will ever have a steady supply of quality leaf tails at a good price...

I am working with Phantasticus, Fimbriatus, Ebens and Henkel's at the moment.

The quality of animals from Zoological Imports is extremely poor. If your going to buy from any importer use Quality Reptiles or Aline. Those have been the only people to supply me with quality animals consistently.

And if you think about it, 10000 animals is a high number. If you have a resale license you should be getting lower prices. Also, this is a specialized species, very few pet stores actually carry them in their shops. And considering everyone hyped up the no more uroplatus geckos scare its not a shock that they are dropping prices. There is no reason they should've cost any more then 60 a piece considering most of these places online have resale licenses, they are getting them for low prices.

Anyways, thats one perspective.... lets see if Michael Barrera will give his as well.

haha, speaking of, i wonder if that dude will ever be back. oh man, was that a mess...

Speaking Of that is there any one that knows how long he is in for?

I would hate to be him right now. Could you imagine explaining to your cellmate that you are in jail for smuggling reptiles. Unless he is in for some kind of paper work scam or hacking in to a computer you are just not going to be the man in the relationship. On the brighter side you can get some cool tattoos in jail... if that is a brighter side.
