B&W tegu questions

cammyleon May 10, 2005 10:01 PM

I plan on getting a baby columbian B&W, about how long will I be able to keep him in a 48"x18"x18" enclosure? And what is a minumum size when fully grown. Which gets bigger a male or female? Thanks

well you could dtart off in that size cage but theres no way the tegu could spend his life in that. your going to need an 8 ft by four ft cage equipped with a good layer of substrate (cypress preferably) a good hot spot or basking spot ( at around 115-120 ) also youl need two good sized hide boxes or hides. thats all i have to say.
good luck,kevin

That size cage will last about 3 months. I would expect a full grown Tegu to reach at least 3.5'-4' average as long as it is raised properly. More than likely bigger if raised with proper diet. The female will be the smaller of the lot. Read up on your care sheets BEFORE you buy and make sure you are ready for a big eating machine that requires a big a** cage in your home. They are great pets but due to their size they are not for everyone. Best of luck, be sure to post photos if you get one!

The Colombian Black Tegu is smaller then the Argentine Black & White Tegu. You should know that Colombian Black Tegus are generally cheaper and easier to get, but require a lot more work. They are timid and flighty by nature and if you got too many days without holding it you will have to work for weeks longer to get it back to handlable. (Note: not all Colombian Tegus are hard to calm, but most are)

I'd suggest maybe a Blue Tegu from BlueTegu.com. These are also smaller then the Argentine Black & White Tegus but have a temperment similar to the Argentine Tegus. They make great pets. If room is not a factor then either of the Argentine tegus (the Red or the Black & White will be fine too)

If you still get a Colombian Black Tegu you can expect that if fed correctly from day one, that the tegu may reach 3.5 feet long, shorter if it's a female. In this case a 6' long, 3 foot wide, 2 foot tall enclosure would be perfect for an adult Colombian Black Tegu.

I hope of was of assistance.
