Bathing or Soaking a Uro

DixieDiana May 11, 2005 07:41 AM

I have read mixed opinions on bathing or soaking a Uro.
Some articles I have read say they only need what water they get from their food. Others say they should be bathed or soaked weekly.
I was wondering what other Uro owners do as far as bathing or soaking or doing nothing?
I got my first URO a little over a week ago and I still have lots to learn.
Thanks!!

I have a couple juvie Ornates that I soak in warm water weekly for 10-15 minutes. They don't really seem to enjoy it that much like my bearded dragons and tortoises do, but I think soaking is beneficial for all reptiles. This is especially true for species that are considered desert species. Many desert dwelling species, including uros, retreat to humid burrows or shelters to help maintain their hydration. In captivity, many owners keep their uros in bone-dry conditions without a humid burrow or hidespot because they think that is there habitat. My opinion is that it would be a requirement to soak such animals at least weekly.

I have not written in for a while in case you havn't seen my name in any posts. My ornates are a juvenile pair from Audrey Vanderlinden. I am mentioned on her website in the testimonials section.

I am not nearly as organized about soaking as Brian, but I do soak them. I have an adult mali and a juvenile Egyptian, and I soak them both (seperately)when I think about it, or when it has been particularly hot and dry. They don't overly enjoy it, but I do think it is good for them, and if they are getting ready to shed it can assist with that process a bit too.

It seems from prior discussions that different types of Uro have different soaking needs too. Some of them seem more likely to actually drink while soaking. I have never witnessed this but I think it was macfads, or somalians, or something along those lines that have a propensity for it.

i occasionally soak my guys, usually for sheds or if they are being medicated or if they walk through a big pile of fresh poo. you just have to be careful that they don't aspirate the water and make sure to dry their tails off so they don't get tail rot
