An update on my egg disection....

JP May 11, 2005 08:04 AM

Well...I got into my mystery egg last night. The egg was a total loss. The entire contents of the egg had already begun to solidify (and putrify). The consistency of the egg was similar to very thick pudding. Once removed from the shell, the egg still held its shape! There was a tiny embryo embedded in the mass, about the size of an orthodontic rubberband. I'll get pictures up in the near future.

Any idead as to why some eggs solidify? Is it post mortem, or the cause of the death? Any thoughts?

Not sure. I bet there are several reasons. One reason could be due to desiccation.

I have heard that before, but that isnt the case here (I rarely ever have any eggs dehydrate and begin to dimple before 6-7 weeks). This egg is only a couple of weeks old, and never lost any moisture. Over the past few years, I've lost maybe 4 to 5 eggs. Most of those have had the rubbery solid texture inside. They almost look like they've been cooked, but of course they haven't. I'm looking forward to hearing the thoughts of our resident forum veterinarian.....
