Camping Big Bend

Shaky May 11, 2005 08:29 AM

We are planning to grab a campsite in Big bend and hunt each side of the park for a couple nights.

Ques. 1- Are the sites readily available in Chisos basin at this time of year?

Ques. 2- Are there any spots that we could pull over and sleep in the back of the truck-and won't get hassled by the law-anywhere in the Big Bend vicinity?

Thanks,
Jack

If catch anything just consider yourself evicted from the park. I would not want a native animal on me in any national park, especially BBNP where they are inclined to search... Big trouble even if you collected it outside the park and it is 100% legal.

Places to pull off... well there is a rest area by the river on FM 170 called the Teepees, you will know it when you see it. But I am not sure if I would feel comfortable sleeping there myself, even armed. You could park somewhere in town at Study Butte or Terlingua (not so much at Lajitas), at least you could blend in with other cars. But you may be compelled to leave at sun up by some of the locals.

Personal opinion though.. It is too hot to camp out if you expect to collect all night and sleep all day. That never has worked very well for me...
