Great Basin rattlesnake

DeanBright May 11, 2005 10:40 AM

My 13 year old son Morgan had Friday off school so we went to the desert in eastern Oregon for the weekend to look for Collared lizards and Great Basin rattlesnakes. The weather was not good for desert reptiles, rain and 45-60.We found this little Great Basin on Sunday,he was laying in front of his hole hopeing the sun would come out,it was only 52 degres. We did find one Collared lizard, our first,a Striped Whip snake and 2 Yellow-Bellied Racers.I will post the other photos in the apropriate catagories.

I REALLY love white on snakes. I love it even more when it is contrasted by darker colors around it. Also, this is the first time I noticed similarities between the head pattern of that snake and the head pattern of corn snakes. I may look crazy but that picture really shows some similarities. You may have noticed the crotalus cerastes I posted below. The thing that first attracted me to those snakes was the white spots on the back. It just looks like the snake lights up. Other species that strike (lol "strike" this interest are Bitis caudalis and some of the arborials. This amazon has some of the coolest looking white I have ever seen. Sorry to sound like a nut case with the "white" but something about it just looks amazing and your photo caught my attention.

Yes,I like the contrast of white on snakes too. That's a nice Amazon,I like the color. I did notice the pattern on the v.lutosus's head,it is a lot different than the v.oreganus and you are right it is simular to a corn snake.

Thank you Rich, I wasn't sure if anyone was interested so I haven't posted any more v.oreganus photos. The dens are empty now,the weather has warmed up and the snakes are moveing. I saw a gravid female today. I will be going back to the desert soon when it warmes up over there. Hopefully I can find more v.lutosus. I will keep up the photos.

Sorry about the Collared lizard but I think he is neat.
