I think that when the males leave a semen sample like that it is old semen that has been retained inside their hemipenes and it has gelled in the shape of their hemipenes and when it is emitted it retains that shape in the water. When they leave these samples on the cage substrate which is usually what happens their is nothing to keep the sample suspended and it loses that recognizeable shape. My males leave these emissions very often from november through may. They probably pass these when they are excited by the presence of females. When they actually mate in the water if they leave any semen in the water during or after mating it is not in a recognizeable shape like that.
