New BRB owner! Got any pointers? :-D

Bellas_Momma May 11, 2005 09:38 PM

Hey Guys!
Well I just got Bella on Monday and Im super excited, excpet for the fact she's about to shed. I know they get cranky, and trust me she is, but will she calm down and be handable after she sheds? I think the breeder i got her from handled her evey day he said she was pretty mellow, but that's not what Im seeing.

DO you suggest spraying her with that shed aide stuff or not?
Is it better to handle her at night or does it matter?

ANy other pointers would be very helpful! Thanks guys!

Bellas_Momma,
...Your new BRB will do exactly what you train her to do. If she strikes and you back off you will be training her that striking will get you to back off. If she bites you and you put her down you will train her that biting you gets you to leave her alone. If you want her to stop striking and biting handle her without any fear. If she strikes do not shy away from the strike. If she bites let her chew and she will learn that you are too big to eat and that biting you does not make you leave her alone. Tame BRBs can be handled when they are in shed and they will not strike. The stress of moving can cause one to forget that it is tame and it will start striking to defend itself. Handling her with confidence will quickly get her calmed down and tame again. Shed-aid is a useless product. If you provide the 90% or higher humidity that these snakes need when they are little they will stay healthy. They often have shedding problems because of being kept too dry or too hot. If the snake looks like it has dry or rough skin rather than smooth slightly oily looking skin then it may be dehydrated. Soak it for 30 minutes to an hour in water and it will rehydrate. Keep it in a cage with 90% humidity and temperature gradient from the low 70s to the high 70s or very low 80s and it will do fine.
Good luck,
Jeff
