New BRB

wombat May 11, 2005 11:49 PM

Here's a pic of our new BRB "Rainbow" - had her 11 days. Fed her 2nd feeding two f/t pinkies tonight, good appetite.

Rainbow's pretty calm- has reminded my young daughter to be gentle though! Daughter loves her, she got chomped pretty good by a hatchling BRB at our big Reptile Expo, but wanted one badly enough to hang in there and keep checking them out, found this one.

I'm keeping her in a plastic tub, about 14" long by 10", but exactly 70 to 80 degree range, 90% humidity, both a hide at the warm end and a wrapping paper tube the length of the tub, bark mulch (Lizard Litter), big water dish, so far she seems settled and quite happy.

I'm going to be interested to see if her first shed keeps it's iridesence?!

Awe! Too cute! Kudos to your daughter for hangin' in there even after being nibbled on.

Beautiful baby.

Thx for comments-

Daughter is VERY brave! Has always had a love of strange creatures, has led me back (very happily)into herpetology after many years away.

Here she is at our local pet expo a couple of weeks ago- this gator has his jaw taped but the pic's still very cool... our thanks to the guys who brought it to the show!

All my rainbows sheddings are mostly white with very little of the patterning showing....no irridesence in the shed......the animal however, They always look best just after a good shed.

Such a baby! Very cute. Definately will have a better "rainbow" after shedding. Just wait....you'll see. Have fun.

Congrats on your new BRB wombat. Sound like you did your homework, because the temps and humidity are great in your new setup. Keep posting if you have any questions.
Enjoy,
Uncloudy

Thanks for the acknowledgement-

I did a bit of reading here on the forum, knowing the baby BRB has precise requirements and is just totally different from the corns and kings and rats and local wildcaught guys that I have experience with... am enjoying this snake a lot...

Try fuzzies or small hoppers. She will possibly not be satisfied with pinkies.

I posted a coupla' days ago on this- her first feeding I gave her a large fuzzy/sm hopper, more in scale with her jaws. She was hesitant but ate it anyway- and had a huge lump in her middle for about 6 days.

For her second feeding I gave her a couple of pinkies- sluuurp. Gone!

So maybe next I try a couple of med/sm fuzzies...

Ahhhhhhhhh, such a great discussion to be having, as opposed to "I can't get her to eat" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

many of me newborn brb's ate hoppers a couple days after birth. Pinkies are like popcorn, I have even had a baby refuse a pinky and then eat a hopper.

I'll continue to try slightly larger items until we reach a happy place.

I'm a little leery to jump up because one of my new purchases from the expo died- a beautiful little Durango Mt. King- it was somewhat skinny when I bought it but okay, a gorgeous snake, I took it home.

It ate a f/t pinkie no prob, but then two days later suddenly regurged and died... temps okay, water okay, no handling after feeding, no obvious cause for puking and dying.

Maybe it hadn't been eating well for awhile before I bought it???

But anyway in the light of that I'm watching Rainbow very carefully. I'd rather feed a little too small and have her be eager to eat during her first month than give her something that will strain her system and sit in her belly for 6 days, maybe come back up!

Or is it more normal for boids to eat large and then digest for extended periods? That's the sort of stuff I'm just learning...

Thx- JAC
