Too many frogs

chwelch May 12, 2005 07:00 AM

I have a 75 gallon tank set up for 4 Sips (1:3 - wanted it to be 3:1, but what can you do). Anyway, I've had them for about two and a half years now. I bought them as froglets and so spent the first year growing them up. Then they started breeding. I hadn't expected them to breed so successfully or for the froglets to be so hardy. Long story short, I have about five frogs now that are sub-adults and about another 15 smaller froglets not to mention about 20 tadpoles growing and a new batch of eggs about once a week. What am I supposed to do with them all?

I have asked local petstores if they are interested, but they aren't. I don't know any other local breeders to trade with (I wouldn't mind trying some additional species). I would be nervous about shipping them anywhere as I've not done that with darts before.

So what do you do with all of your baby frogs?

Where are you located? I would suggest to advertise them on another forum dedicated to darts - dendroboard . com. If you post there, and give your location, I am sure you could find someone in your vicinity who would be interested in them
As for shipping them, you could also find some great suggestions there. I don't mean to take away from KS, but the posts in this forum are pretty sporadic. You may have better luck with another that specializes in darts.

Have you tried donating them to a school and helping a teacher set up a tank? You could claim the exemption and allow students in your local school the chance to learn about poison dart frogs.

I have made that offer to several homeschool groups that my wife is in contact with......no takers yet.

Really, that surprises me. Usually home school groups are looking for cool educational opportunities. Well, if all else fails, just send me some.
