Can you tell a true granite by marker traits?

anson May 12, 2005 08:33 AM

I had heard that a true granite is not only a speckled baby. That certain other things had to be present for the animal to be a genetic granite. A spot or irregular black mark on the neck, just behind the head. Yellow or orange sides. A light colored head. Light colored or golden eyes. A white belly.
Is this true and do all those things have to be present on a true genetic granite?
Is this male BP a true granite in your opinion or do I have to prove him out to know for sure?

Here is the belly. He is older than the pics now as they were from last year. He bites like a doberman. LOL
I know I'm supposed to support him better when holding him but it was just a quick pose for the picture.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that he is a genetic granite. Only one way to find out for sure though...find him a female friend and let the breeding begin.

Would you bet on her too?

She was a very reluctant feeder at first and it took a while to get her eating regularly. She has a very small kind of funny looking head and large eyes.

well she doesn't have the normal break in the neck stripe, but definitely worth breeding with that male. You never know, you might end up with a "extreme" granite (which is a really stupid name so I'll call it a homo granite which sounds a little gay, but much less stupid). Only thing you have to do know is put a 1000 grams or so on her...lol

I thought it meant a black mark or dot in the neck stripe.
What exactly is meant by a break in the neck stripe?
They are not bad for pet shop babies. Would you believe I found them together in the same pet shop? I was in there when the shipment came in and I bought them both at the same time for $50.00 each. I figured it's well worth giving it a try.

Man what a deal! You did good. I got my 2.2 granites before the prices started going up last year. Now ch babies seem to be going for 300 to 400 at the shows I've been to this spring, especially the ones with all the markers. Like I said, good catch, have fun!

Side coloring looks good, granite type pattern, does not really have the break right behind the head though. When they are old enough breed them and prove them! Good luck.! Good looking animals.

I'm not sure I understand what I am looking for.

Randy_Middleton May 13, 2005 03:40 PM

and the one posted by Bustyballs. They both have something different going on where the head and neck join. Your female doesn't really have that going on. Don't get me wrong, she is a looker, and you should give her a try when she's big enough!
Both are good looking animals, good catch!
