ATB breeding for color, opinions?

AbsoluteApril May 12, 2005 02:48 PM

Hello forum,

I've been off for a few years. When I left there was a ton of mystery about breeding colors of ATBs. I was wondering if any of that has been figured out? ie, reds more likely to produce red babies, or is it still all just appearing random?

I have a female ATB that was born 12/25/01, she still has a way to go before I would breed her, but I am going to buy a male this year. I am leaning towards a solid red or the type that are yellow with orange stripes. Any one have any opinion on what might be a better choice? Any idea at all on what I might be able to produce? (I've only bred BCI before)

The father was a normal garden phase, the female was more of a solid deep purplish color. There was one other baby in the litter that looked like my girl and the rest were halloween phase.

this is my girl when I first got her:

a few months later

she had this great orange stripe down her back and a bright orange belly, now the orange is gone, she is more of a uniform grayish purplish but still has some 'v's on her back that have pink coloration, you can see in this pic from 2003

early 2004

I don't have any recent pics of her but she looks basically the same. Never been bit by her, I love my ammie!
Thanks for your thoughts or opinions...
-April

Hey April,

I know that Dan Mulleary of DM Exotics breeds for red and he gets a lot of them! His female is a very nice red animal that produces true reds. I think a garden or two may get thrown into the mix but you will get mostly reds when they are bred together.

I am collecting red animals in hopes of breeding for red. I think you should look into obtaining a red animal if you want red in your bloodline....it seems to work for Dan so hopefully we can all get in on the red thang!

Sorry April one more thing. We have found out through breeding emeralds that the babies tend to take after their mothers looks in most cases with some of the fathers traits mixed in. I have also noticed the same thing in amazons with Dan's prize red animal being a female. I do believe that when two random amazons get thrown together that the babies will be mixed but when two gardens get bred together, most of the babies are gardens....so yes it is still a crapshoot unless you are breeding specific colors together.

Just my .02

Last time i produced amazons, i bred two typical LTC garden phases together and got seven babies, none of which were even close to garden phases, they were either pinkish salmon colored or a light green color with red...one of the pink ones had a black eye and a pink eye, they were pretty cool babies, ill try to dig up some pictures somewhere but i didnt take any digitally.

Hey Brandon,

Sorry I should have been more clear.....I consider garden phase animals to be 'halloween', the pinkish salmon animals, greenish with a pattern, grey with pattern, and black with pattern. My idea of colored is yellows, reds, oranges, and all of the varieties and combination of patterns with those colors.

Great looking green there Billy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh, i always thought gardens were considered the black, grays and browns
My misunderstanding

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. I want to do the breeding more for the experience and just to see what pops out. This baby did seem to take after her mother more. That is a good theory... well if and when I ever breed her I'll make sure to post pics. I am leaning more towards spending the cash on a nice red male, even if the babies didn't come out red he would still make a great display. thanks for taking the time to reply!

Hi April. I think Matt hit everything on the head. Anyway, this will be my first year producing ammies and I will let you know what these two produce. The male is a big, patternless, light green animal with a very few salmon colored highlights here and there. The female is a big heavily patterned red/orange girl. She is looking pretty heavily gravid right now and I'm hoping to have babies in September/October (fingers crossed anyway). Of course, there will be MANY pics of the babies when they arrive!! Good luck with your future attempts and keep up the great work with your current girl - she's a beauty!!

That would be very cool to see what those two would produce!
I am so ingrained in the corn snake and boa morph types that the just random possibility of the ammie babies makes it very exciting.

Good luck with those two!

Then if you don't like the colors your female throws, you can get a second red female and let the red male breed both. Variety is certainly the spice of life with ATBs!

Thanks April! Yeah, the randomness of ammie breedings has always intrigued me too and I'm really looking forward to see what my girl throws. These two are so different in their appearances, it should be interesting to see how many are patterned, to what extent and what kinds of colors show up! Ahhhh, I bet they'll all be garden phase little snappers!! Which would be fine with me too! I just love my ammies!
