Fawn and her swollen tongue

the4thmonkey May 12, 2005 07:29 PM

Fawn has done better since her steroid shot on Monday. I took her back for another one today. She weighed in at 24 grams, same as Monday, but less than before all this started. We didn't see the Dr, but I met this fabulous Veterinary Assistant who has really been into reptiles for several years. She has a little rescue program going and has kept collareds before. She has not ever seen or heard of this and took a real interest in little Fawnie. She said she has some resources and people on the internet, and that she was going to look into it for me. She said since I am in the medical field the Dr might be willing to let me give Fawn shots at home for a while, which would certainly be a financial break for me. But we have to find another avenue, because continuous steroid use will eventually ruin her liver. I just hope she gets better and stays that way after a few shots, but it is sure encouraging to find someone who wants to help her.
Today was a nice day, and although I don't have their outdoor cage ready yet, they all basked on a pre-warmed rock outside for about an hour. When I went to bring them in, they had all crawled under the rock since I had last checked on them. They were not showing their pretty colors, but I lined them all up for a photo anyway. Cadence is going to be a real beauty, she is the most fantastic emerald color.

This one was taken about 2 and a half weeks before Fawn laid her clutch. Fawn is the one in the middle. She had a bad shed going and looks much darker than she does now. Saige was not gravid, she has had a few little pink stripes since her clutch last summer.

My goodness hpow many of these shots does she need for her alergy to be aleviated ?

I would have to know what the heck is causing it, or it could just continue. How about the bugs you bought, or caught could they have had something on them? But if so, I suppose your others would have been sick.

Weird! Hope shes fine soon Val.

that male does not look very happy about fawn in the second picture, ha ha. they are all nice looking lizards and that is a very cute shot of them on the rock. as for the allergies, i am sure you have thought about it but have you changed anything at all? calcium? vitamins? if you gut load your crickets have you changed anything that you are feeding them? have you changed anything on you? new soap, perfume? any new cleaning supplies? i don't see why they would not let you give her the shots, i have no medical training and i had to give shots to my rescued lizard last year

I think Otis probably was not appreciating Fawn's claw in his eye! And yes, I have wracked my brain trying to figure out what Fawn could be allergic to. I think if it was the stuff I put on her to help her shed, she would have gotten better when I quit using it. I buy the same products over and over again and cannot think of anything new Thanks so much for sending good vibes Fawn's way. She is a lot better after the 2nd steroid shot...and it also seems to be helping her shed. The old skin is coming off her head and I am so glad! The doctor will see her on Tuesday and I have my fingers crossed that she won't need any more. But I know sometimes people experience a "rebound" of their symptoms once steroid use is discontinued, so that is something I am prepared for.

As long as her tongue is swollen I guess she will need the shots until we can come up with a reason or another plan. It is making me nuts, too, trying to figure out what she is reacting to. I wonder if her hormones went nuts after being gravid and laying her clutch for the first time. She looked unhappy or distressed throughout her pregnancy but otherwise seemed fine and ate well. I just don't know, sure wish I did!

I have eczema, where if my skin gets to dry I develop a rash (allergic reaction to dry skin). I have a little nasty rash on my right middle knuckle and even though it is soft from moisturizing it is still there and doesn't want to go away unless I use a light steriod cream.

It's been awhile since you used mineral oil and aloe vera, but that still might have been the cause. I hope she gets better, sounds like you're a good mom.

She is so musch better after the 2 shots. I hope that is all she needs to take care of it.
